There's probably no better time to get a deal on an SUV. Carmakers are doling out generous rebates and dealers are slashing prices to reduce swollen inventories. But should you take the bait?

I'm a former SUV owner who has crossed to the other side, but I'm not here to preach. I don't know what kind of car Jesus would drive, and I don't believe that SUVs are a conspiracy to aid terrorists. SUV proponents will even argue about the safety statistics. But it's tough to ignore concerns about pollution. Because most SUVs are not cars but trucks, they tend to be gas-guzzling polluters.

In an unwritten but expensive policy that has evolved over the past decade, Philadelphia city government has replaced much of its fleet of smaller, economy sedans with sport utility vehicles that cost $25,000 and up.

If 900 of the SUVs were converted to sedans, the city would save $540,000 a year in fuel. The school district could hire 15 more teachers with that money.
