LEADER: Let your steadfast love, O LORD, be upon us, even as we hope in you (v.22, NRSV).

II. Invocation

O' Lord Our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the Earth! We gather together here as Your Body to worship You, King of Kings and Lord of Lords. We confess and proclaim Your Lordship over every aspect of our lives. We humbly ask your presence with us now. Help us to open our hearts to you and worship you in Spirit and truth. Christ, it is in your precious and holy name that we pray, Amen.

III. Worship Hymns

The following hymns focus on Jesus' Lordship:

  • He is Lord
  • Jesus is Lord of All
  • Living for Jesus
  • Come All Christians, Be Committed
  • I Surrender All
  • Fairest Lord Jesus
  • Lift Up Your Heads, Ye Mighty Gates

IV. New Testament Lessons

Lk. 6:46 - "'Why do you call me, "Lord, Lord," and do not do what I say?'"

See Section II and Section III of the WWJDrive Preaching & Teaching resources for additional texts.

V. Old Testament Lessons

Micah 6:8 - "He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God."

Dt. 30:19-20 - "'This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.'"

VI. Prayer of Confession

Precious Lord, take our hands, lead us on, help us stand. We confess, O' Lord, that oftentimes we let go of your gracious hand to go our own way. We don't follow you like we should. We call you "Lord, Lord," and yet we do not do what you say. We do not completely love our neighbors as ourselves. We do not allow Your Lordship to extend to every decision we make, to every aspect of our lives. As such, we cease to trust You in everything and instead trust in our own righteousness. In our lack of faith we are like the father who came to Jesus to heal his son: "I believe; help thou mine unbelief (Mk. 9:24). We confess again that You are Lord of all of our lives. Help us in our unbelief, in our lack of trust in Your complete Lordship over every aspect of our lives. Pardon us through Your grace, and let your grace empower us to live the lives of righteousness You've called us to. Thru the storm, thru the night, lead us on, to the light. Take our hands, precious Lord, lead us home. Amen.

VII. Prayer of Thanks

We are thankful for all of the gifts of life you provide, including the gift of mobility. For all of us who can walk unhindered, we give thanks, and we pray Your blessing on those who are hindered. For all of our various modes of transportation, and for all those efforts to make our transportation choices less harmful in terms of pollution and environmental degradation, we give thanks, and pray Your blessing upon them. Bless now these gifts we bring, that they will help us do Your work in the world and further establish your Lordship in our lives. Christ, it is in Your precious and holy name that we pray. Amen.

VIII. Children's Sermon

Who walked to church today? Raise your hand if you walked to church today. Did anyone ride a bicycle to church today? How did you get here? Well, for those of us who came to church in vehicles today, whether a car or a truck or an SUV or a minivan, what was the fuel that powered all of our vehicles? It's what we fill up our tanks with when we go to the gas station. Yes, what powers our vehicles is gasoline. Who knows where the tailpipe is? Yes, it's in the back, the "tail end." When the car is on, when the engine is running, have you ever noticed what comes out of the tailpipe? What does it look like? What does it smell like? When we burn gasoline in our car engines to make the car go we also make pollution come out of the tailpipe. That pollution goes up in the sky and makes the air we all breathe dirty and it helps cause something called global warming. How many of you know someone who has asthma? Well, pollution from our cars makes it harder for them to breathe. We should all try to find ways to reduce our pollution. Let's pray to God to ask Him help us. "Dear God, help us find ways to reduce our pollution. Thank you. Amen."

X. Benediction

Go forth to walk humbly with the Lord (Micah 6:8), to be the Body of Christ in the world. "And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father" (Col. 3:17).
